Nicola shares her Teach Portsmouth success story

Nicola Sanders has built an impressive career in education over the past 30 years. Working as a religious studies teacher, Nicola wanted to find what other opportunities there were in education.

After attending a Teach Portsmouth recruitment event last year, she connected with an exhibitor and secured her first support role at a local school before finding a permanent position as an alternative provisions manager at Priory School.

Nicola made the decision to transition from teaching to a support role as it aligned perfectly with her skills and family life. This change not only allowed her to apply her extensive experience in education but also gave her the opportunity to continue forming strong, supportive relationships with young people.

Nicola talks about her Teach Portsmouth success story and her love for working in education, as she encourages others to attend a jobs fair.

Could you tell us a little about your background and career history?

I have a long career in education spanning over 30 years. I have mainly been a religious education teacher, but I have also worked as a cover supervisor after having children.

What attracted you to working in a support role in a school?

Working in a support role suits me better personally, but it also enables me to use my skills in education. I get to do what I love best which is to work with and support young people.

Why did you decide to attend our recruitment event?

I came to the support and teaching assistant recruitment fair at Central Library because I wanted to know what opportunities were available in Portsmouth.

What has been the most rewarding part of your new job so far?

I really enjoy forming strong relationships with young people to encourage them in school.

What has been the most challenging part of the job so far?

Learning everyone's name!

What advice would you give to someone thinking about attending a recruitment event?

Go for it! There are plenty of exhibitors who have a wealth of information to share with you. They are all very encouraging and they all want you to be successful.
