Get application ready with online route finder tool

Find your route into teaching with our online tool

As a new academic year begins, applications for teacher training will open soon. To support those looking at their options, our online route finder has been updated to present the latest training courses from providers in the city.

If you are at the beginning of your journey into teaching and unsure where to start, this online tool takes you step by step through what you need to know.

While the tool will present information to you in a succinct way, you can always contact Teach Portsmouth if you have any specific questions.

Introducing the route finder

Every year, we update the online tool using data sent from local teacher training providers, to give you a snapshot of what is available in Portsmouth.

Through a series of questions, you'll soon discover what options are available to you, based upon your requirements.

Depending on what age group you decide to teach, training providers will require applicants to have at least a C/4 in maths and English. If you are wanting to teach primary age, a C/4 in science will also be required.

The remaining questions will take you through the types of training you want, the subjects you are interested in teaching and whether you want a salaried route.

Navigating your options

The route finder tool will present information in an easy-to-read way. However, we appreciate you may be in the early stages of researching your options and trying to work out whether teaching is for you.

There will be different factors to consider when making the decision to apply. We've included some tips which may help inform your decision.

Speak to training providers

The online tool will show you the courses each training provider offers in Portsmouth. It will then link you through to their website for further information.

While this will go some way to support you, we would recommend an informal conversation with them.

All providers welcome contact as they can help you understand requirements unique to them or give you an idea of what else you need.

Review your funding options

There are many funding options to train. There are bursaries linked to specific in demand subjects, tuition fee loans and grants which are designed to make teacher training possible.

The Teach Portsmouth website includes information on funding for teacher training including early career payments. You can also visit the Get into Teaching website which lists more options.

Get experience in the classroom

If you are yet to step into a classroom, get some experience supporting pupils in a voluntary capacity. Most schools will welcome people wanting to give their time to help. Before this happens, you will have to complete a DBS which will be organised by the school.

This will help you understand whether working in a school is for you. It will also give you invaluable experience which will be useful if you decide to apply as training providers will be looking for this on your application.
