Webinar: Teach Portsmouth presents special educational needs teaching
Helping children and young people become the best version of themselves has always been one of teachings greatest rewards. If you are interested in supporting those with additional needs, Teach Portsmouth's next webinar could be for you.
Regular readers of the news hub will be familiar with Teach Portsmouth presents, a series of free webinars that invites those who have an interest in the profession to learn more from Portsmouth-based teachers. So far, the series has explored routes into teaching, changing career in teaching as well as career progression.
Introducing Teach Portsmouth presents SEN teaching
In the previous series, we focused on the essentials to kickstart your teaching career. The new series takes a look at areas of the profession that are more specialist.
Special educational needs (SEN) teachers work with children and young people who need extra support and guidance, to teach in a way that helps them reach their full potential.
Our next webinar on Wednesday 20 October from 4pm - 5pm welcomes three Portsmouth-based professionals to share their experiences working in primary and secondary settings, supporting children and young people with complex needs.
The webinar will explore:
- Typical duties of a specialist educational needs co-ordinator (SENCO)
- The characteristics and qualities needed to become a SEN teacher
- The differences between primary and secondary settings
- Career progression routes in SEN settings
Those who attend the webinar will have the chance to ask questions during a live Q&A at the end of the session. While every effort is made to answer as many questions as possible, we may have to come back to you separately after the webinar. Councillor Suzy Horton, Deputy Leader and Cabinet Member for Children, Families and Education at Portsmouth City Council welcomed the series return:

Those who attend the webinar will hear from three local experts who work in primary and secondary settings. Luci Johnson, head teacher at Redwood Park Academy, will be sharing her experience of working in a special school for 11 - 16 years old. The schools supports children with complex learning difficulties as well as some pupils who have autism, speech, language and communication difficulties.

"You could be working as a learning support assistant on a 1 to 1 basis or a teacher in front of a class, you'll see the difference you are making on a daily basis, enabling pupils to excel."
Explore your options
The webinar will give those in attendance a first look at special educational needs teaching in Portsmouth and the routes to get there. Alongside Luci, other contributors will give an insight into working as a special educational needs co-ordinator (SENCO) and a teacher based in an inclusion centre. All contributors work in Portsmouth school settings, providing a realistic picture of specialist teaching locally.
