Webinar series returns with special educational needs teaching
A webinar for future teachers successfully showcased the rewards of the profession by focusing on special educational needs and/or disabilities (SEND) and the need to support children and young people in the city. Learn more about the different roles available and the skills you need to progress in the profession.
Councillor Suzy Horton, Deputy Leader and Cabinet Member for Children, Families and Education at Portsmouth City Council said:
"Teaching is a rewarding career for many reasons as you are helping children and young people reach their full potential. The most important takeaway from this webinar, is regardless of what age group you teach, every teacher is a teacher of special educational needs and/or disabilities.

"The professionals who spoke during the webinar work in primary, secondary and specialist settings which gave attendees a realistic picture of what it's like to work in a school or academy in Portsmouth."
The webinar series was created as a way to reach people further afield than Portsmouth, who might be interested in working in the city's schools and academies. Each webinar provides a top-level view of teaching with the latest series focusing on specialisms within the profession. This episode invited three professionals to talk about their experiences in primary, secondary and specialist settings. One of three contributors, Fran Marshman, deputy head teacher and special educational needs co-ordinator at Langstone Infant School said:
"I really enjoyed being part of Teach Portsmouth's webinar, talking about the vital role colleagues play in supporting our most vulnerable pupils.
"It's important to remember that there isn't a set pathway when becoming a SENCO, however, qualified individuals will need to demonstrate their work experience, showcasing how they have helped those with additional needs achieve more."

Teach Portsmouth presents special educational needs teaching is the first in a new series of webinars focusing on teaching specialisms. The next webinar in the series will focus on early years education and the exciting careers people can apply for in the city. More information will be published in due course however the webinar will broadcast live on Wednesday 19 January as part of Portsmouth City Council's aspirations week.
